WHY NOW
Small-space growing is moving indoors.
The trend joins tabletop food growing with brighter lights, pumps, apps and stacked formats. Manufacturer performance claims still need real-world scrutiny.
Tabletop vegetables move into focus.
The Royal Horticultural Society named tabletop veg in its 2026 predictions, highlighting food growing where outdoor space is limited.

Auk says its Mini 2 adds larger pots and a dedicated feed option for tomato and chilli growing. Suitability still depends on space, light and user care.

Choose the garden you can maintain.
The smartest feature is the one that removes friction from your actual routine.
Countertop pods
Compact, tidy and beginner-friendly. Watch proprietary pod and nutrient costs.
Open planters
More freedom for seeds and substrates, with more decisions about water and feeding.
Stacked gardens
More growing area per floor footprint, but more height, cleaning and reservoir weight.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Five checks before the first seed.
A glossy harvest image does not show the cables, cleaning, consumables or mature plant size.
Measure the full growth envelope
Count the raised lamp height, mature leaves and harvest access—not only the empty appliance footprint.
Inspect the wet path
Reservoir, pump, tubing and seals must be easy to reach and clean. Keep plugs, adaptors and extension leads away from splashes.
Match the system to the plant
Herbs and leafy salads fit many compact units. Fruiting crops often need more height, stronger light, pruning and pollination help.
Understand the consumables
Check compatible nutrients, pods, substrates and replacement parts. Follow measured instructions; more feed is not automatically better.
Price the human work
Allow for topping up, cleaning, root trimming, pest checks, seed failures and the electricity used by lights and pumps.
